"MUSIC raises the soul of man ever higher than the so-called external form of religion. That is why in ancient times the greatest prophets were great musicians.

The mysticism of sound and music

If you came across a spacedrum, you know how magical it sounds. This unique instrument has a gentle, surreal sound which will take you into a world of beautiful vibrations no other instrument can create. If you have never heard about this spaceship looking instrument, it's a french designed melodic metal percussion. Phillipe Maignaut, for nearly 20 years, manufactures, provides and tunes steel drums (pan drums) in the South of France. Several years of his research in mechanical production of steel drums, and experience by making traditional "pans", have been used to build the Spacedrum project in 2011.

Musicians like Yuki Koshimoto from Japan have embraced this impresive instrument, using it to connect with themselves and the music on a deeper level. Opposed to more popular instruments like piano or quitar, the Spacedrum seems to attract people seeking something a little more otherworldly and transendental. More melodic than the didgeridoo, though in the same energetic wheelhouse, the Spacedrum can be played by anyone, beginners or experienced, and musicians looking for new sounds, new types of game or just musical discovery.

Yuki Koshimoto's journey with this instrument began after she'd deliberately set out to rediscover herself through travelling. Inspired by a busker in London, she took up the Spacedrum in 2009, and has since been playing with other artists, sharing her own songs for us to relax into. The sound of the Spacedrum embodies mindfulness: its music is meditative, organic, and artistic. Enjoy the music video of the natty dreadlock talented soul and let yourself dive into an endless space.
