How we make and maintain dreadlocks
Maintenance and repairs
Some people like to have their dreads tidy and without any loose hair flying around the dread, some never maintain them. How your dreads look depend on how tidy you like to have them and also on the quality and type of your hair. Some type of hair get tangled easily so what happens over time with dreads is that they join together. If you have this problem, you might notice that it`s more difficult to keep them clean and after the wash to dry them well inside so they don`t grow mildew and smell. If you want to keep them tidy, clean and healthy, we are here to help.
Our maintaining and repairing method doesn`t involve anything chemical or unnatural.
NO WAX. NO NASTY STUFF! All natural and organic.
We use only hands, a crochet hook and love for all my maintenance work.
We maintain the dreadlocks from the base to the end in each session.
The crochet method we use when done correctly creates round, smooth and tight dreadlock body.
It is a pain free method if done carefully, however if you have a very sensitive scalp, it may be a little painful when the hook pulls the hairs near your scalp. You determine how tight you would like the base, but generally we do not like to overtighten it as this causes the stress for your scalp and it doesn`t really improve the look of your dreads.
Warrning - new and very short hairs will not stay inside your dread as they are not long enough. Little "imperfections" of your dreads are normal. Every person has a different style/look and that`s what makes your dreads unique.
Getting knotted
We specilize in 100% natural dreads using only your own hair.
You choose the size and structure without the use of any chemical products or wax.
In our opinion and from our own experience there is no need to use any products, except natural organic shampoo WITHOUT conditioner before we start. Your hair need to be as dry as possible without any oils so it is recommended to wash your hair regulary for a week or two depending on the type of your hair - might be more often as you would usually do, especially if you have very oily scalp! I will talk about the preparation process in more detail in the blog you find on this website.
To start you need your hair to be cca 10cm the shortest.
Before you start, it is useful to know few things. If your hair is healthy and silky, it takes longer time to dread and mature. This is the reason why some dreadlock makers recomend bleaching your hair before getting dreads so that your hair becomes demaged and try which means it`s easier for them to dread your hair. We don`t think this is what you should or need to do. Be aware there are aslo other very aggressive methods some people perform, like using toxic chemicals, glues, cotton strings and wires, wax, surfboard wax, etc. These techniques will only demage your dreads, leave them sticky, messy, breaking and you may end up cutting them off or deperately searching for someone else to repair them which will only take more time and effort. The way your dreads are done is important. You will find more info in the blog about what to do, better not to do, how to take care of your dreads and much more. If you have a question which you can`t find the answer for, don`t hestitale to get in touch.
The technique we use is called "twist and rip", followed by a crochet method. There is also another method called "backcombing" we used to do in the past. After we learned twist and rip, we saw a difference between these two ways. If twist and rip is done properly, it forms a tighter body, especially when followed by a crochet method. Backcombing method doesn`t form the dread as tight as when done by twist and tip technique. Besides, when backcombing is done too aggresively, it may cause a permanent damage to your hair and it is believed it may lead dreadlocks to develop bumps, loops, zig-zags as compared to the other method. See the gallery for a clear idea of how it is done with us.
If you don`t want to get full head knotted, no problem, getting one or a couple of dreads can be a nice change, too. See the gallery for some inspiration. Creativity has no limits :)
Remember, it takes only time, patiency and maybe (not always necesserily) few crochet hook maitenance sessions before your dreads become mature and solid. If your dreads are done well and you take a good care of them, they will look beautiful from the start!
If you`re thinking of getting them, but you are not sure wether they will suit you or not, check out our gallery, get inspired by different styles and trust that people of all styles, backgrounds and ages can look great with dreadlocks :)
Sorry, we don`t offer extentions here, but if you already have extentions, we will maintain them happily for you.
100% natural, with love and care for your natty dreadlocks

New babies! Gabby came with her dreads in this messy condition to repair them. She made them by herself using backcombing technique. After a chat with me, she decided to go home, brush them out and come to me again ...and as you see, this is the result, what do you think? Gabby wanted her fringe undreaded.
